"I first became entranced by the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1963. I was working in Chicago for the Background Music Department of the Seeburg Corporation, searching for music to be sent to Europe, where it could be arranged and recorded at less than half the cost of the same services in the U.S.A. One day an album of Brazilian music crossed my desk: Joao Gilberto singing bossa nova, composed mainly by Jobim. I put the record on the turntable, began listening, and a whole new world opened up. Although I didn't understand the Portuguese lyrics, it was immediately obvious that these songs were the work of an astounding talent. Every one contained delightful melodic and harmonic surprises, and I set to work transcribing them so that I could add them to my repertoire. At the time I was playing a solo gig in a small restaurant: an ideal place to learn and practice new material. By the end of a week I was playing a dozen or more Jobim tunes every night." –Eddie Higgins
